After around a 3 hour car ride to Battambang the first stop is the legendary Bamboo Train.
You take a ride through the countryside of Battambang and experience a former mode of transport.
Our next stop is Phnom Banan. This is an old temple back from the 11th century, which is located on the top of a mountain. To go there, you actually need to climb over 300 stairs. Which with all the heat is challenging but afterwards definitely rewarding with a great view.
After you had some rest down at the mountain the journey continues to Phnom Sampeau.
There 3 reasons to visit this mountain.
The first reason is the gorgeous Wat which is located on the top of the mountain. From above you can observe the splendid countryside of Battambang.
No worries – we can almost drive all the way up.
The second reason is not that nice. During the Khmer Rouge the mountain was used as a killing station for people from the surrounded areas. You are able to visit two of the killing caves to learn more about the recent history.
The third reason is absolutely fascinating. During sunset a constant swarm of bats is leaving a cave.
This goes on for almost an hour. During the hour there definitely leaving several hundreds of thousands, if not even over a million bats a cave.
You can enjoy this spectacular in combination with some food and a local beer.
After this the journey goes back to Siem Reap.
